©FDNY Response Videos 2019 Since there are so many comments talking about the time it took to put water on the fire, I thought I would put the fire into perspective: #1: The story is in the radio traffic #2: Firefighters were met with an advanced fire on arrival. There was charged smoke seeping from the front windows and every crack in the buildings cornice and cockloft, indicating that fire had likely already extended into the cockloft. For those who don't know what that is, it is a void between the top floor ceiling and the building roof that runs along the entire building. In this space fire can spread rapidly undetected. #3: The fire apartment was packed full of waist deep clutter. This condition made it nearly impossible to enter the apartment due to the door being jammed shut. Furthermore, it creates many obstacles for firemen once inside, one said that "we never once touched the actual floor there was so much stuff." #4: The door was secured with a fox lock which is impossible to know when there is fire and smoke pushing at the door. Members were flowing water through the crack in the door which is all they could do to keep it at bay while other members took the door off its hinges. #5: Multiple lines were operating inside. One line at the front door and another that was attempting access by breaching a wall. This all takes time. As soon as these difficulties were recognized a line was stretched up the front fire escape. Don't forget the line on the roof protecting the exposure. Hopefully this can clear up any confusion.
