Animals appear to regularly move outside of their territories and home ranges, but such movements have typically been studied only at small spatial scales. Using a novel approach, Cooper and Marra document unexpected long-distance movements by a migratory bird during the breeding season. Although Kirtland’s Warblers moved farther relative to their normal daily movements than any other species reviewed, this finding is likely an artifact of technological limitations and research biases. If they are as common as the authors suspect, these long-distance movements have several important implications for the ecology, evolution, and conservation of animals.
