Imagine climbing a 48-story building without any kind of protection or rope. And then visualize the same, but at 60 years of age. That's what Alain Robert, the so-called French Spiderman did to celebrate his birthday, climbing the Parisian building Total Energies. Robert is surely one of the best solo urban climbing athletes in the world. But what few know, is that his exploits began long before the internet popularized some much younger climbers. His feats include climbing the facades of the world's tallest and most complicated buildings, such as the Burj Khalifa and Cayan Tower in Dubai, or the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. In the 1980s, when he was 19 years old, his climbing exploits made him the cover of numerous French magazines. An accident helping a group of climbers left him in a coma and countless broken bones. You may never climb again," Dr. Hoel, also a climber, told him. With great tenacity, and despite after-effects that include vertigo and epilepsy to this day, in 1995 he climbed his first skyscraper in the United States. To date, he has climbed more than 200 of the world's tallest buildings. He is included in the World of Fame of the 100 best athletes in the world, along with Jesse Owens, Muhammed Ali, Pele, and Michael Jordan. If you want to know more about the life and lessons of the human spider, don't miss the interview in my program Reflections with an Accent.
