Today I’m walking you through my full process for how I grow potatoes in grow bags, from prepping the seed potatoes to planting them in my go-to soil mix. If you’ve never grown your own potatoes before, I think you’ll be surprised at how easy and rewarding it is. This is one of those crops that doesn't ask for much but gives a whole lot in return. I'm planting about three weeks before my average last frost date, which is my sweet spot every year. But before we even get to the garden, I show you what happens behind the scenes in my seed starting room where I'm chitting—also known as green-sprouting—my seed potatoes. This step helps break dormancy and gives the potatoes a strong head start before they ever hit the soil. You'll learn how to tell if your seed potatoes need to be cut (and how to do it right), why I dust the cut sides with elemental sulfur to prevent disease, and how I get my potatoes to sprout short, sturdy shoots under lights—no long, leggy growth here. Out in the garden, I'm planting into 30-gallon grow bags filled with a compost-rich soil blend. I’m using Soil³ Veggie Mix from @Soil3OrganicCompost which is my go-to because it’s a high-quality, regionally sourced soil that’s loaded with organic matter and everything my heavy-feeding potatoes need to thrive. I’ve used it for years with great results. In the video, I’ll walk you through how many potatoes to plant per bag, how deep to plant them, how far apart to space them, and how I layer the soil as the plants grow. I also mix in a bit of slow-release organic fertilizer to make sure those nutrients are available right from the start. 0:00 – Intro: Timing Your Potato Planting 0:25 – Choosing Seed Potatoes 0:57 – Prepping for Chitting or Green Sprouting 1:54 – When & Why to Cut Seed Potatoes 2:46 – Protecting Cut Potatoes with Sulfur 3:43 – Easy Chitting Setup Ideas 4:34 – Planting Setup: Containers & Soil 5:37 – Fertilizing for Success 6:28 – Placing the Potatoes in the Grow Bags 7:40 – Covering & Watering In 8:28 – What Happens Next Subscribe to my email list to receive weekly updates on new content and online courses: www.joegardener.com/subscribe If you're looking for any of the gardening tools, gear, supplies, and equipment you see in my videos, most of that can be found at the link below. https://www.amazon.com/shop/joegardener Find Soil3 shipping availability at www.soil3.com Disclosure: Some links listed are affiliate links.
