One of the things I love about it is just the coloration. It can come from almost a very white slip to the extreme of red, and the most common is kind of a gold or yellow color. The pieces behind me are good examples of Hopi pottery. Most of these are either Fannie Nampeyo, or the other two on the far-right side are actually Nampeyo. Hopi pottery has been made continuously since probably around 1200 AD. The Hopi Indians have the longest continuous inhabited town in America, and that's has been around since 1200 AD. You can still go to Hopi, and you can get great pieces of pottery, and a lot of them will be very similar looking to this. To the untrained eye, they have this yellow slip and they're very attractive pieces. So, when you think about Hopi pottery, think about most of the pieces that will be made are really going to be somewhere probably from about 1900 to contemporary. And the pieces that we specialize in are things that are anywhere from 1870 which are called pollaca, which refers to the type of slip that you'll find, which is a glazed or crack slip. These are the earlier pieces that we generally handle to about the 1950s, and even today, we'll have some of the more contemporary potters as well. Potters that we specialize in are Fannie Nampeyo, Old lady Nampeyo, Frog woman, Feather woman – people that have made their name in pottery somewhere from about turn-of-the-century on. Again, Hopi pottery is a lovely coloration, and the price range for a nice piece from the 30s can be as little as $75. A great Nampeyo from the turn-of-the-century can bring as much as a quarter of a million dollars. So, find Hopi pottery and enjoy.
