Abandonded Mam Tor Road Landslip Explore, Castleton Peak District A few miles outside Castleton is the former A625. Once a busy route over the Peak District, but now is a dead end. The road was abandoned in 1979 after numerous landslips meant the road was no longer viable to keep on repairing every few years. Mam Tor (also known as the Shivering Mountain) towers over the road, above the collection of Blue John caverns and former mineral and lead mines. The strip of tramac that once weaved it's way through the valley and up the mountain is now just a buckled ribbon of broken tarmac - only recognisble in some sections by the odd glimpse of a painted white line. The power of nature and the landslide of mus and shale in less than 50 years has moved the road a considerable distance. At the bottom of the road is the busy tourist town of Castleton. A honey pot destination for travellers and locals due to the quaint shops, caverns, countryside walks and excellent pubs. Just before the road is the Odin Mine - once an important lead ore resource.
