An interesting video explaining why you cannot assume that Oil Sampling (once) will tell you about Conrod Bearing wear. This is because Oil Sampling works best when you have a known quality (say new engine, or new conrod bearings for example) as you can carry out multiple and regular Oil Samples to see if any wear is occurring. The key thing is 'multiple' samples. For it to work really well you need to have repetitive Oil Samples so you can compare them and look out for any strange rises in wear metals. Carrying out either one Oil Analysis (or multiples on an engine that has say 50k+) it's only going to give a 'snapshot' of the wear present. This is because every time the engine oil is replaced the wear metals are mostly removed as they are suspended within the oil. Example 1: If an engine has had 2 previous oil changes (since new) and you take an oil sample on the 3rd service you will be analysing approx 33% of wear. Example 2: If an engine has had 5 previous oil changes (since new) and you take an oil sample on the 6th service you will be analysing approx 17% of wear. (These are just hypothetical examples to paint a picture). Carrying out a single Oil Sample when the engine is already 'used' cannot give an adequate enough condition report - as this video shows. Oil Sampling is good, and useful in many circumstances (fuel dilution, metallic wear checking etc) but very rarely does it give you a definitive answer regarding Conrod Bearing wear.
