The California State Library hosted a forum on the Caryl Chessman case and its impact on the death penalty debate. Filmed on October 5, 2016 from 10AM to noon in the Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building in downtown Sacramento. The fate of Caryl Chessman divided California and captured worldwide attention. Chessman was convicted in 1948 of kidnapping with bodily harm and sentenced to death. From San Quentin’s Death Row, he fought through the courts for the next 12 years and turned to Governor Pat Brown for clemency. Chessman’s plight gained international support and his story was on the cover of Time Magazine two months before his execution. The California State Library hosts a panel discussion on the Caryl Chessman case and its lasting impact on the political and legal debates on the death penalty. The panelists are writer Joseph Rodota, whose play “Chessman” premieres October 13 at the B Street Theater in Sacramento; Ethan Rarick, author of “California Rising: The Life and Times of Pat Brown;” and archivist Michael Dolgushkin, who cataloged the State Library’s collection of Chessman’s papers. State Librarian Greg Lucas will be the moderator. If you would like to watch the video presented at [46:57], please click the Youtube link below: • Chessman - The End (1960)
