https://roothy.com.au This 60 Series Landcruiser (an HJ61RG to be precise) has over 630,000Kms on the clock and has seen some work. Before my mate Simon bought it the truck had already done a couple of laps of Australia, one of them towing a caravan, Si picked it up about 10 years ago with 370,000Kms on the clock and since then it has been his daily drive, family beach and holiday truck as well as heading off on a few trips with me like the last big trip I did with the original MILO to Darwin a while back. All that work has meant that despite Si's obsessive oil changes for the engine, gearbox, transfer and diffs, all using Penrite Oil of course, the gearbox and transfer have been making some pretty awful noises lately, so we knew it was time for a rebuild. With the truck down at MrLandcruiser, Richard and Mick dived in and pulled the box and transfer out to get it stripped down and find out what was going on. Overall everything was in really good condition which is a testament to those regular oil changes, but it wasn't long before they found the issue. The trust bearings were almost worn completely through and the needle bearing on the idler shaft in the transfer case were showing some serious wear, combined these issues would have accounted for the noise. In the gearbox itself the Lay Shaft was showing signs of de-lamination which would have pretty soon become a serious problem and would have failed. Fortunately the Terrain Tamer gearbox & transfer rebuild kit includes all of the bearings, seals and parts required to completely replace all of the consumable items, even down to the rubber boots. Having picked the kit up from my local Terrain Tamer store at Archerfield I was already on my way when Richard called to tell me about the issue with the gearbox lay shaft, but because Terrain Tamer have such a huge range of parts on the shelf they were able to courier that to us overnight, and with the new Terrain Tamer E-Store you don't even have to pick up the phone!
