Visiting Phnom Penh’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Killing Fields was one of the most emotional and important parts of our Cambodia journey. In this video, we take you through these heartbreaking sites that shaped Cambodia’s modern identity. (Content Warning: This video deals with sensitive and potentially upsetting historical events, including genocide. Viewer discretion is advised.) In this video, we share our experience visiting two significant sites from one of history's darkest chapters: 01:22 Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21): Once a high school, this site was transformed into the notorious S21 security prison by the Khmer Rouge. We explore the preserved buildings and learn about the estimated 20,000 people imprisoned, tortured, and documented here before being sent to their deaths. 03:33 Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (The Killing Fields): Just outside Phnom Penh, this peaceful orchard holds the brutal history of mass executions. We walk the grounds, guided by audio accounts, visiting the mass graves and the memorial stupa filled with skulls, a stark reminder of the over 1 million lives lost during the regime. While difficult, visiting these sites offers crucial insight into the atrocities committed between 1975 and 1979 and serves as a powerful memorial to the victims. It's a vital part of understanding modern Cambodia and the importance of remembering to prevent future atrocities. This was a profoundly moving part of our Cambodia travel series. We believe sharing these stories, however difficult, is important. We invite you to share your respectful reflections in the comments below.
