This can be very helpful for cutting holes, creating shapes, adding details, and much more. There are a number of different add-ons that extend this functionality even further. At its simplest, all you need to use the Boolean modifier is a base shape and a cutter shape. The base shape is the shape you want to cut, and the shape you’re going to apply the modifier to. Then, you can set the shape intersecting your object as the object you’re going to use to cut your base shape. One thing you might want to think about doing is changing the way your cut object is drawn. You can adjust this by going into the object settings and adjusting the draw type to wire frame. That way it won’t block your view of what the object you’re cutting looks like. Notice that this cut is live, and adjusts whenever you move the object around. One of the other cool things about this modifier is that you can also apply modifiers to your object without applying the original Boolean modifier as long as they’re below the original Boolean modifier in the stack. Notice that there are 3 different kinds of operations that you can use when working with Booleans – there’s the difference, which will remove material where the 2nd object intersects the first. There’s the union, which will actually combine the two objects into a single object. Finally, there’s the intersect, which will only leave the material where the 2 objects intersect each other. Note – you can still use the subsurf modifier, just make sure to use it BEFORE you use the Boolean modifier.
