(3 Jul 2019) LEAD IN: Senior officials from East Asian countries have gathered in the West Bank town of Jericho for a Middle East development and investment conference. The organisers sought to distance themselves from a high-profile While House-led economic conference held last month in Bahrain. STORY-LINE: The Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh greets visiting East Asian officials in Jericho. They are in town to attend a conference on the development of the Palestinian economy. Officials from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, among others, traveled to the West Bank to reaffirm their support for the area's struggling economy. The Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD) conference comes a week after a similar workshop was organised by White House adviser Jared Kushner in Bahrain, where he outlined his plan to bring peace to the Middle East. Kushner's plan sought to separate the economic situation in the Middle East from the political. But speaking to delegates at Wednesday's conference, Shtayyeh said the two are "interrelated". "This timing is a direct response and direct message that explicitly states that those who wants to help Palestine they should be within the Palestinian political agenda and there is no way that you can disengage economic from politics," Shtayyeh says. He says the nations attending CEAPAD were "here to help us build a state", reiterating the Palestinian Authority's priority. Attending the conference, Masaharu Kohno, Japan's special envoy for the Middle East, said the event was a "historical moment" for the economic relationship between Asian states and the Palestinian territories.
