One of the most popular post-WWII genres in Japan is the "Shomin-Geki," or "Stories of the Little People." Rather than being about samurai, courtesans, geisha, corporate execs or detectives, this genre focuses on the common man/woman and the struggles they have just getting along. One of the great practitioners of this genre is Naruse Mikio, who is not well known in the west. The genre continues into the modern day. In the 80's, a TV version of the genre appeared. Called "Oshin," it told the story of an 80 year old woman who flashes back on her very sorry life. It was a cultural phenomenon. Which of these is the more effective example of Shomin-geki? You might be surprised. THIS IS A REUPLOAD OF A VIDEO THAT I DID ABOUT A YEAR AGO, WHICH COVERS JAPANESE FILMS THAT YOU PROBABLY NEVER SAW AS THEY HAVE NOT BEEN WIDELY AVAILABLE. DURING THE PROCESS OF REUPLOADING VIDEOS, I WILL OCCASIONALLY MAKE AN OLD ONE PUBLIC. THE REST ARE UNLISTED BUT MAY BE FOUND UNDER THE PLAYLIST "SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS." THANK YOU FOR WATCHING, LIKING, SHARING AND SUBSCRIBING! --- Please see the following updates on the channel! OLDER "SENSEI DAN VIDEO COMMENTARIES: My older commentaries from a previous channel are being reuploaded here now. They may be found in the SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS Playlist. I am putting them up as Unlisted so they won't be confused with the newer content. Please check them out! JAPANESE MUSIC AND DRAMA TITLES: Original copyright owners have become FAR more strict with pulling down old uploads. For the time being, I am just putting up classic Japanese commentaries from the days of prime time movie showcases. These often but not always include embedded commercials from original telecasts I recorded. Depending on YouTube and the copyright holders' 's future policies, I may try uploading music and dramas again in the future.
