The Black Caribs, also known as the Garifuna, in Honduras, were the product of an amalgamation of maritime African maroons throughout the 1600s, who secured their freedom in St. Vincent by escaping slavery from neighboring islands. These people mixed in with the Kalinago natives, also known as the Caribs. Over time, the Black Caribs, who were more phenotypically distinctly African, began to control the interior of the island. After St. Vincent was officially ceded to the British from the French in 1763, the Black Caribs continued to fight for their freedom and land in the island. After decades of being a thorn in the British planters' side, a final conflict in 1797, during the years African rebellions throughout the Caribbean, led to the deportation of the Black Caribs to Central America. From Roatan, a tiny island off the coast of Honduras, the Black Caribs, now referred to as the Garifuna, dispersed to various parts of Central America, including Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and a little in Costa Rica. Today they are still resisting the state in terms of fighting for their land rights and the preservation of their culture and language. This video is a documentary of my trip to Honduras to interview the Garifuna people to see how they are living today.
