Vincent van Gogh is perhaps the figurehead of artists not becoming famous until after death. The troubled artist left behind his worthless artwork to his brother after committing suicide. This brother then left them behind to his wife after his own death. It was the late Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law that then went about trying to make money from the paintings. James Dean only appeared in three films before his tragic and untimely death, and the final of those three films was released posthumously. James was starting to turn heads by the time he passed away from a fatal car wreck. However, it wasn’t until after his passing that he would come to be known as the icon that he is considered to be today. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, better known as Iz, was a Hawaiian legend for his ukulele playing. When he passed away in 1997, 10,000 Hawaiians attended his memorial. Years later, the musician would become a posthumous global phenomenon thanks to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Edgar Allan Poe died insane and penniless, just like one of the protagonists from his strange-fiction stories. Finally, Anne Frank may be the celebrity figure with the saddest story of all, as she died in a concentration camp before her diary was published.
