The phrase "Tere ishq nachaiya" (Your love has made me dance) by the great Sufi poet Bulle Shah, is not about a literal dance of joy, but a dance of surrender. During his time, dancing in public was banned. Here by using this phrase, he in intentionally destroying his social status, his pride, his identity, and is saying “ I am nothing, only your love exists”. He speaks of drinking the "cup of poison," the hardships a lover must endure (much like Meera and the poison sent by the Rana). He describes how the "sun" of love has risen, making the "stars" of his worldly intellect disappear. The rhythmic beat of "Thaiya Thaiya in Sufism, represents staying connected to the earth while the soul reaches for the Heavens.
