Apart from the Refugio Teodulo, a mountain station to the east above Breuil-Cervina in the province of Valle d'Aosta, which is only open to public motorised traffic on certain occasions, the ascent to the Colle del Sommeiller is the highest legally accessible route in the Alps. You can reach an altitude of 2996 metres up to the summit plateau, where the weather station and the d'Ambin ski hotel once stood. The high plateau and a small lake are located in the Mont-Cenis massif directly on the Italian-French border. In addition to the tunnel through the Mont Cenis massif from Bardonecchia to the French town of Modane, the engineer Germain Sommeiller is also responsible for building the road to Colle del Sommeiller. The engineer therefore also gave his name to this pass. The Italian and partly also the French side of the pass were a large, well-developed ski area for tourists. After a serious avalanche accident at Christmas 1968 and the drastic decline of the local glacier, the ski area was abandoned and the infrastructure fell into disrepair or was gradually dismantled. Only the road, which was once very well developed and therefore easy to drive on, is a reminder of its former function. The route was easy to drive on with normal cars and even buses. Today, the route should only be travelled by off-road vehicles and experienced drivers. The best time to drive the route is between August and the beginning of September, as the snow on the west side of the pass is only slowly melting and fresh snow can be expected at the end of September. While the weather conditions often restrict access to the pass for safety reasons alone, the municipality of Bardonecchia imposes a ban on motorised vehicles from 15 July to 30 September. During this period, the route is completely closed on Thursdays. On the other days, it is only open from 09:00 to 17:00 against payment of a toll. The ascent begins in Bardonecchia and Rochemolles and leads past the Lago di Rochemolles reservoir, the Rifugio Scarfiotti and the small Madonna degli Angeli chapel and the second large plateau ‘Pian dei Morti’ to the pass. The ‘Stella Alpina’ motorbike meeting takes place every year on the second weekend in July in the alpine pasture area of the Rifugio Scarfiotti. The road is located in the Italian province of Torino in the Piedmont region. ▬ Content ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Intro 00:15 Prolog 01:27 The Ride 44:14 And the Mavic spoke... 48:16 Outro ▬ Links ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Playlist Italy: • Italy / Italien Playlist Passes: • Passes / Pässe WalkTheMavic: / @walkthemavic4197 ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Walk The Mavic (WTM) - Interesting roads, passes and gorges in the Alps - Nature and landscapes - Castles, forts, fortresses and fortifications - Photos and videos, if possible and allowed, also aerial photos/videos with the drone.
