The chorale "Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen" translates roughly to "Oh, what should I, a sinner, do?" which seems a very apt text for Lent, plus it gives me a chance to play Bach's BWV 770, one of unfortunately few chorale partitas that he wrote. It is in ten sections, the first of which is the chorale played fairly straight, and the rest variations of differing character which do many of the expected things: faster figures, right hand dominant, left hand dominant, until the ninth which suddenly gets much slower and is in 3/4 instead of 4/4. At this point Bach also takes the somewhat unusual step for him of putting in dynamics which must indicate manual changes as organs of Bach's day did not typically have any other way to quickly change the registration. The final variation, rather than dynamics, actually says "Oberwerk" and "Rückpositiv" to indicate the changes, more or less equivalent "Great" and "Choir" on a modern organ. In general the former is a more powerful division so it is louder, but to me, at least, both registrations should be fairly full. This piece also has no obligatory pedal part at all, again quite unusual for Bach, which means that it could be played reasonably on harpsichord or clavichord.
