Jackie & Shadow spent the day in Lovers Lament Language - Mating, Nesting, Ca-Noodling and Goofing Off! Signs are good for another clutch this season! 📌Nesting season is underway. Egg laying season in Big Bear is January through April. Jackie laid her first egg on 1/23/26 and her second on 1/26/26. Jackie and Shadow were away from the nest for an extended period of time and a raven was able to breach the nest and eggs. We confirmed that one egg had a visible crack and there was also territorial activity. Both reasons may have kept Jackie and Shadow away from the nest, allowing the raven access to the eggs. We will watch to see if Jackie is able to lay a replacement clutch. Her parents were named Ricky and Lucy. ℹJackie and Shadow have successfully fledged 4 chicks together: Simba, Spirit, Sunny and Gizmo. They were not tagged so there will be no way to positively identify them going forward. We hope they are enjoying their grand adventure. Big Bear has many visiting eagles, including first year juveniles from SoCal and Arizona. All identification outside of the nest is tentative. Big Bear Bald Eagles are not banded. ℹThe nest is located in Big Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. It is about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine tree. The nest is the current home for Jackie and Shadow, a local bald eagle pair. ❓How do you tell Jackie and Shadow apart? Jackie is larger than Shadow. Jackie’s beak is both longer and thicker from top to bottom than Shadow’s. ❓How old are the eagles? Jackie is 15, Shadow is 13. ❓How can the eagles handle the cold temperatures, snow and rain? Bald Eagles are well equipped to handle harsh weather conditions. They have down feathers against their skin that can hold in the heat their bodies generate. On top of the down, they have approximately 7000 waterproof feathers that zip together to keep the wet and cold out and the heat inside. ❓Where do the eagles sleep at night and does the light bother them? During nesting season, Jackie the female sleeps in the nest, Shadow sleeps perched in a tree nearby in case he is needed. The light at the nest is an infrared light, this light cannot be seen by the eagles or humans. It is only picked up by the camera, which enables us to view the nest at night. In the off season, both eagles sleep perched in trees within their territory. ❓Fiona & Fast Freddie are San Bernardino Flying Squirrels (SBFS) that live nearby.
