When I was reading the letter from St Paul to the Philippians – the one that talks about, for this God raised Him, and gave Him mind, and gave Him the name that is above all names, every tongue shall confess, and every knee shall bow – I think the alarming point came up when I realised that there were many more instances in my own life as a disciple that my tongue has refused to confess and my knee has refused to bow. I questioned God, “How will You establish Your authority in my life?” The moment of grace came when I realised that God does not overwhelm us with force or authority. Instead, God overwhelms us with love. That moment on Calvary when we look up upon the cross, when we see him lifted high above the earth and He draws on men to himself – is this exact moment that we witness to a God who is completely self-emptying, who reveals Himself as Love. My prayer for all of us is that we may begin to want to surrender in a more authentic way, in a deeper way – to the great love of God and finally allow the name of Jesus to have the final say in our lives.
