In this episode, we are joined with Dominic LaMantia to discuss a late medieval and early modern debate centered around the question of analogy, and controversies that develop after the time of Thomas de Vio Cajetan, specifically with what we are going to call, “the Cajetan Problem.” As is well known, many debates and controversies ranged between scholastic theologians on the topic of analogy and syllogistic demonstration. One particularly influential and popular solution to these controversies came from Cajetan who provided his own theory of proportionality, loosely based on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. And while Cajetan’s treatise on analogy enjoyed widespread popularity from the Middle Ages onward, Cajetan’s solution was implicitly taken up by Jesuit scholastic figures, used to discredit realist accounts of objective precision, and to justify nominalist ontologies. In this interview, we are joined with Dominic LaMantia to discuss the “Cajetan Problem” in late scholastic debates on analogy. Dominic LaMantia is a PhD student in philosophy at Notre Dame. In 2017, he graduated from Georgetown University, where he double majored in philosophy and math. He is interested in medieval philosophy, metaphysics, and philosophy of religion.
