There are a number of ways you can get to Machu Picchu pueblo, also known as Aquas Calientes, from Cusco. We have chosen to take a minivan operated by Cusco Car (www.cuscocar.com). We left Cusco at 6 am and we arrived at our destination around 1 pm. The journey was comfortable and we stopped a couple of times, once for a breakfast and second time to use bathrooms. Journey on a minibus through the mountains was very exhilarating and we were dropped off a few minutes walk from the main Hidroelectrica station. There are no cash points in Hidroelectrica. We thought it was important to clarify this as there are a number of online entries stating otherwise. Once in Hidroelectrica we began our walk which took us around 4 hours walking at a comfortable and no rushed speed, taking footage and pictures as we walked. There are a few places along the way where you can stop and have a cold drink and something to eat, if you wish, or even have an ice cream. At Machu Picchu pueblo there is a cash point, actually even a few of them, so do not worry. You can always withdraw some money there if you run out of cash. After we secured our tickets to Machu Picchu we relaxed at hot baths of Aquas Calientes and it was really lush and a very relaxing experience. Soaking sore muscles, after a few days of constant walking, while surrounded by nature and spectacular views is absolutely worth every single sole. We paid 20 PEN each, for additional few soles you can also add a visit to and a swim in the waterfall which is a part of the whole Aquas Calientes complex. Relaxed and ready for the next day's adventures we had a nice meal at a local place. We have chosen a set Tourist Menu at 25 PEN each. The meal consisted of a starter, main meal and a dessert, so if you have a chance ask for a Menu Turistico. That will save you some dosh and will allow you to taste some typical dishes of this region. Double win! When planning your trip to Machu Picchu you have a couple of options. you can either climb up or take a bus. The climb/walk will take you just over an hour, so take this into consideration, while a bus ride will take around 30 mins max. climb/walk is free, the bus ride costs 12 USD one way. You can do half/ half, in case you decide to bus it both ways buy your return ticket, as Consettur (https://comprar.consettur.com) in Aquas Calientes is the only place to do it! Walk back from the top to the pueblo took us around 40 minutes, and was definitely worth it. On ur way back from Aquas Calientes we have decided to stop at the beautiful Ollantaytambo, to which we have decide to travel to by train. Peru Rail discovery train which was reasonably priced and comfortable. The journey took just over two hours and was extremely convenient as we boarded at Aquas Calientes and got off in Ollantaytambo. We liked the simplicity of this journey and fact that there was no need to make additional travel arrangements. We had a really good and tranquil time in Ollantaytambo, and would strongly advise that you spend at least two days there. This part of the Sacred Valley is magical and very musical. Food is good and reasonably priced, while the local market has the most delicious and unique fruits for you to try such as pacay or zapote.
