Many women don’t struggle to identify their boundaries, but feel anxious after stating them, often overexplaining to soften the impact and restore a sense of safety. Kristen and Jen describe this as a nervous system response rooted in early conditioning that clarity wasn’t enough to maintain connection, so saying no can trigger scanning for danger, disappointment, or withdrawal. They emphasize that understanding from others doesn’t equal safety and that overexplaining can be dysregulating by pushing people into fight-or-flight and into managing others’ reactions. The solution isn’t better wording but building capacity to tolerate discomfort and stay present without earning approval. They offer an “after-boundary regulation” grounding exercise and invite listeners to notice what happens in their body right after saying no. 00:00 Why Boundaries Feel Hard 03:32 Explaining as Safety 06:04 Misunderstanding Triggers 07:51 Build Nervous System Capacity 10:03 Pause and Ground Yourself 11:52 After Boundary Exercise 16:25 Reflect and Wrap Up If you enjoyed this episode, connect with your hosts, Kristen or Jen, you can find us at the links below!
