The Blackwater Inn, South Main Street, Youghal, County Cork. 'The Blackwater Inn', South Main Street, Youghal, was the first proper 'lounge' bar in town designed with the more comfortable seating and plush interior decor. Proprietor Kevin Power converted the old bar into the modern style back in the sixties in keeping with a rapidly changing Ireland. It was around this time when it was becoming more acceptable for women to drink in public houses. The design of the new lounge was by local architect Raymond Morris. The barmen at the time wore a white jacket with red trim and every pint was served with a beer mat. Some of the bar staff who worked there were Charlie O'Neill, the late Jim Hogan, Martin Hennessy, and the Cooney brothers. Well known British journalist Claud Cockburn was a regular drinker there and would send copy to Fleet Street, London, from the public phone in the bar. The new lounge proved to be extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and as time went on singing and entertainment was provided. The musical husband and wife duo 'Pat and Eleanor' were one of the regular bands that played there. Kevin has long retired now but the premises is still as popular as ever and called 'Hennessy's Bar'.
