So much swirl...... I'm certain there were plenty of people who were expecting me to remake this, especially back in 2021 when I uploaded that initial HB batch. With the 1974 update being the final remake, this would seem to be the logical buildup from that. However, I never went through with it, even despite considering it on a few occasions. This time around, I decided to finally give this a proper try,. If the timing is any indication, yes, BG's recent remake of this was the final push to get me to finally do this. While the trail, to me, always looked tedious to pull off correctly, it surprisingly wasn't that hard to pull off. This remake also has another first (seriously, this could be a whole series), that being the use of shrink/fatten for curves, mainly used to influence the width of the trail/star in different areas. The trail itself was made using textured plane, subdivided to fit the curve. There are two copies of the trail, one being entirely colored without the line texture, the other having the line texture (done for nodes). The star is just a simple mesh, with the follow path constraint used to move the star along the curve. Additional keyframing had to be done to keep the star fixed to the end of the trail, however. Shape keys were used to slightly enlarge the star in the finished product. Speaking of which, the finished product turned out to be, by far in a way, the most tedious part. Two extra curves were added specifically for the twist in the trail, but it always looked off no matter how many times I modified it to look right. Thankfully, there turned out to be an easy solution. While working on the remake, BG suggested changing the thickness interpolation to smooth the trail out. This ended up being a total life saver. After a bit of adjusting, I found setting the interpolation to Cardinal produced the best results. Mask layering was used for revealing the twist in the trail, using a plane animated to the star. As mentioned, nodes would be used, mainly to color the finished product, using a mix/multiply node to blend the colored trail and the final product together, with alpha over being used to place the star + text in front of the trail. To top it off, the camera is set to orthographic, with the slight zoom/pan being animated via lens settings (removed in the PRESENTS variant). Programs used: Blender 2.79b Inkscape - Glyph extraction/wordmark Audacity - Noise reduction, equalization VEGAS Pro 16.0 - Compiling (normally, I do that within Blender's VSE, but I decided to try something different) Original material belongs to Warner Bros. Discovery.
