I made the first three turnouts using the FastTracks jig system without any 3D printed tools. Cutting and gapping the copper ties was one of the most time consuming and fiddly tasks of the entire build. So I set about making my own 3D printed solutions for the issues of cutting the ties to length and gapping all the ties to prevent a dead short in the track. FastTracks offers a copper tie cutter than makes it easy to cut the ties to length but does not have a gap cutting function. Getting the gap cut in the right place and looking consistent is much easier to do with a jig. With a small triangle file you can cut all the gaps for the turnout at once with greater accuracy. 3D printers are amazing technology!
