Each text will be read twice Tip 1: Take the time to read the questions Students will be given time to read the questions before the text is played. Read the questions CAREFULLY so that you know what to look out for. For example, pay attention to question words like ‘how’ or ‘why’. Tip 2: Pay close attention to the recording once it starts Do not get distracted and look at what other students are doing. Focus on the questions. If you are confident of the answers, write them down immediately. Tip 3: Don’t pause to think of the answers! As the recording is playing, it is a mistake to hesitate and pause to think of the answers because if you do so, you are missing important parts of the text which may contain the answers to other questions. Leave them as blanks. As each recording is played TWICE, you can always come back to them later. For example, T or F questions which may require more time to consider. Tip 4: For the first playback, focus on the main ideas. It is alright if you do not catch all the details during the first playback. Knowing the main ideas can already help you score some points. For example, questions asking about ‘main purpose’, ‘main ideas’, etc. Tip 5: For the second playback, focus on the details! The second playback is the final playback. If you have missed any details, now is the time to listen closely! This will help you to answer questions that require some details from the recording. For example, ‘why’, ‘what’ or ‘how’ questions.
