However, this production was a New Year's special that aired in 1997, produced by Toei, and directed by veteran filmmaker Akira Inoue, who had worked for Daiei. It has a strong entertainment flavor fitting for a New Year's production, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. The performances of the supporting cast, such as Koutaro Satomi and Makoto Fujita, are also noteworthy. After a fight with the corrupt priests of Shoshazan Enkyoji, Benkei (played by Ken Matsudaira) burned down their grand temple and fled. He eventually made his way to Kyoto, where he began stealing the swords of the samurai of the Heike clan on the Gojo Bridge. It was on his thousandth sword that he encountered a young man named Ushiwakamaru (played by Kazuhiko Nishimura), who at first glance seemed like a woman. Benkei was impressed by this young man, who was stronger than any opponent he had faced before, and offered to become his retainer.
