If you have been affected by suicide in your role as a firefighter, you are not alone. The Carson J Spencer Foundation has created educational video to help firefighters overcome the tragedy of suicide. The video illustrates the many ways suicide affects firefighters, showing a need to develop resources to support people in its aftermath. It also provides strategies and resources to best support firefighters affected by suicide, beginning the process of transitioning firefighters from the crisis of suicide to prevention efforts. With a strong culture of stoicism, the fire service has often had a cultural taboo on dealing directly with mental health challenges such as trauma and grief. This video helps model for firefighters that it is understandable to be affected by difficult suicide calls and the suicidal behavior or death of a co-worker. By normalizing these concerns, firefighters are better able to take action to help support those affected and eventually take greater steps in suicide prevention efforts.
