What if one of the simplest ways to protect your brain as you age… was moisturising your skin? Moisturising your skin might do more than keep it soft. Research suggests it could help slow cognitive decline as we age. One of the big drivers of ageing is chronic low-level inflammation — something scientists call “inflammageing.” And surprisingly, the skin may play a role in that process. As skin ages and becomes drier, it can release inflammatory molecules into the body. Because the skin is our largest organ, this may contribute to systemic inflammation — which can eventually affect the brain. In a study of adults over 65, participants who applied moisturiser regularly for three years showed little to no cognitive decline, while those who didn’t moisturise experienced typical age-related decline. The reason may be that moisturising helps strengthen the skin barrier, reducing inflammation throughout the body. Sometimes the simplest daily habits can have surprisingly wide-reaching effects.
