Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida attended a ceremony in Bangkok to honor the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. King Bhumibol reigned for 70 years. His birthday was December 5, and the country marks Fathers' Day on that date. He died in 2016. The monarch presided over the laying of the foundation stone for a statue of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which will be the centerpiece of a new park due for construction on the site of what was once a horseracing venue. After his accession, King Maha Vajiralongkorn kept a low profile, spending long periods in Germany. The year has seen the image and role of the country's monarchy come under intense scrutiny. But last year, following unprecedented dissent towards the powerful but opaque institution from crowds of mainly young people, he returned to Thailand and embarked on a busy round of public events. More than 150 activists have now been charged under harsh royal defamation laws, which carry prison sentences of up to 15 years. Some of the accused face multiple charges. Last month, Thailand's Constitutional Court ruled that any call to reform the monarchy may be seditious, bringing further legal jeopardy to campaigners. Rallies pushing the reform agenda have fallen away in number and intensity in recent months. The royal institution's standing grew steadily during the reign of the current monarch's father, King Bhumibol, through a vigorously projected image of wisdom, humility and tireless, benevolent service. As a result, it is considered by many to be a sacrosanct pillar of Thai identity. Its reputation is fiercely guarded by the country's ruling elite, including the courts and the military.
