The decisions by Finland and Sweden to join NATO, and their accession to the alliance, have been among the most consequential results of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Yet the impacts extend well beyond continental Europe and into the Arctic, which has also drawn growing attention from the Trump administration. On February 25, the Center for the National Interest hosted geopolitical risk consultant Tom Sanderson for a briefing on his perspectives and impressions from a recent visit to the Finnish–Russian border and other sites. He discussed European and Arctic security risks, as well as the role of Finland and other Scandinavian countries in addressing them. —Tom Sanderson is Principal at Tom Sanderson Consulting, a geopolitical risk firm, and is the former Director of the Transnational Threats Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he conducted extensive fieldwork around the globe, authored numerous analytical reports, and briefed U.S. officials, members of Congress, and others. Today, his work focuses on terror finance, sanctions evasion, and asset tracking and recovery in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Paul Saunders, President of the Center for the National Interest, moderated the discussion.
