AUBURNDALE — It took three weeks for Auburndale to play its first three games, and at times the rust showed. Penalties wiped two touchdowns off the board along with an extra point, but the Bloodhounds still went on to defeat Kathleen, 17-0, on Friday night at Bruce Canova Stadium. Daryel Glover scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter that allowed the Bloodhounds to put away the Red Devils. "We looked like a team that hadn't played in three weeks," Auburndale coach Kyle Sasser said. "But we also looked like a team that rises to the occasion when things don't go our way. That's what I've been telling them — the big picture. They listened." Leading 3-0, Glover scored on a 7-yard run that capped a six-play, 31-yard drive. Auburndale's second touchdown also came on a 31-yard drive with Glover scoring on a 2-yard run. The game was marred by a scuffle in the fourth quarter where both coaches had to coral players who tried to run on the field. Nobody was ejected, but each head coach sat three players for the remainder of the game. The officials will send a report to the FHSAA, which then will decide if any more discipline is needed. Here are three takeaways from the game. "These kids know each other," Sasser said. "They grow up together and play youth league together. Sometimes they forget that we're trying run a first-class program. Just because that happens, you can't react to that." Auburndale finds balance on offense. The Bloodhounds finished with 270 yards on offense. Quarterback Brycen Livaditis threw for 135 yards on 10-of-17 passing, and the rushing game gained 135 yards on 29 carries. Auburndale's defense dominates. The Bloodhounds held Kathleen to just 110 yards of total offense. They turned back three scoring drives, one on an interception, one on fumble recovery and two on first-down stops. Sophomore Keon Young was one of the defensive standouts. He broke in and make a tackle on third-and-2 that went for a 3-yard loss to the Kathleen 25, which forced a punt. Young then returned the ensuing punt to the Kathleen 31-yard line that set up the Bloodhounds first touchdown. "He's a dynamic player," Sasser said. "He's very athletic, he's very coachable and passionate about what he does." Also, for Auburndale, Samuel Etienne came up with an interception. Robert Anderson led Kathleen with 57 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Anthony Oldham was just 4 for 10 for 64 yards with an interception. Penalties slow Auburndale It appeared that Auburndale took a 7-0 lead in the first half on when Young returned a punt for a touchdown, but the return was brought back because of a penalty. Later in the first half, Livaditis competed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Jatavious Scaife that also was brought back because of a penalty.
