The Voice That Sings by Robert Fuller Murray The voice that sings across the night Of long forgotten days and things. Is there an ear to hear aright The voice that sings? It is as when a curfew rings Melodious in the dying light A sound that flies on pulsing wings. And faded eyes that once were bright Brim over, as to life it brings The echo of a dead delight, The voice that sings. I was attracted to this poem because of its title. It explores the themes of memory, nostalgia and the power of the voice. The voice, within this poem, serves as a dynamic symbol of the past. Although this poem can be interpreted as symbolizing the end of life, it can also be seen as honoring the closure of a chapter in life, or even the conclusion of a single day, as illustrated by the imagery of “curfew rings” and “dying light”. The poem evokes feelings of sentimentality, reminiscence and longing for reflection. The music celebrates the ability of the human voice to bring about a sense of acceptance and joy, particularly in measures 37 to 51 and 67 to the end where the chorus “flies on pulsing wings”.
