Welcome to Goats You Should Know, a short series of tips and shortcuts for players who want to navigate the world of The Long Dark a bit faster or more efficiently. Such shortcuts can be lifesavers if you're low on condition, trying to escape a blizzard, or need to elude a charging predator. This might be the path that clued most people into the possibility of goating going up as well as down. Ash Canyon is a loot-dense region, but going the way you're meant to go puts you on a long, winding path populated by many wolves. So why not take a shortcut? Skittering up the rocks from the Bitter Marsh to Homesteader's Respite spares you the "wolf gauntlet" and leaves you one climb from the top of the zone. From there, it's only a short trip to Miner's Folly and the gold mine. Those who reject goating because of its cheesiness will no doubt see this as vindication of their position, and they're free to play their game as they see fit.
