Big Bear is a year round destination for recreation, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter and early spring to boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking and bicycling in the summer and fall. The lake is about 7 miles long and about a mile wide at its widest point. At an elevation of about 6700 feet, the lake is significantly cooler in summer than surrounding areas at lower elevation and it receives abundant snowfall in winter.
