Rip Stop Meniscus Repair with Novostitch

Radial split meniscus tears are difficult to repair. The RipStop technique (borrowed from rotator cuff repairs) reduces the risk of the sutures pulling out and failure of repair. If your surgeon takes out your meniscus your risk of arthritis at any age increases dramatically. Typically this tear would have been removed but by repairing it, we give our patients the best possible chance to reduce their risk of arthritis. Adding biologics such as bone marrow aspirate (BMA), PRP or amino can aid in the healing of these tears by placing growth factors directly at the repair site. While this level of difficulty for repair of the meniscus isn't for every surgeon or device, I repair these routinely with the Novostitch device from Ceterix. My experience in 250+ repair with this device, is that the risk of failure is less than 5%. I offer option to nearly all my patients versus increasing their risk of arthritis. Should the repair fail, at least we tried. Saving as much of the meniscus is a top priority in knee joint preservation.
