It was built after the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953, which claimed thousands of lives in Zeeland. It’s a 9-kilometer-long storm surge barrier that stretches across the Oosterschelde estuary in Zeeland. When dangerous storm surges threaten, the 62 steel gates can be lowered to close the estuary. 01:00 – 01:38: Uitkijktoren Burgh-Haamstede The Uitkijktoren (Lookout Tower) of Burgh-Haamstede stands on the Blinkert, the highest dune of Schouwen-Duiveland, in the middle of the forest reserve Boswachterij Burgh-Haamstede. From its top, visitors enjoy sweeping panoramic views over the dunes, forests, villages, and all the way to the North Sea. Originally built by the regional water company as part of the public waterworks and pumping station, the tower has become a landmark in its own right.
