Documentarian Ema Ryan Yamazaki's film, "Koshien: Japan's Field of Dreams," has been a huge hit in the baseball and film worlds in 2020. With no games to air earlier in the year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ESPN aired the film, introducing Americans to Ema's talented storytelling style and the fascinating world of Japanese high school baseball. Ema joined host Shane Barclay on JapanBall's #ChatterUp to discuss her background, the inspiration that Ichiro Suzuki provides her, and the creating of the film. Recap: https://japanball.com/chatter-up/ema-... Full Transcript: https://japanball.com/chatter-up/full... Bio: Ema Ryan Yamazaki is from Kobe in Japan, born to a British father and Japanese mother. She lived in Japan until moving to New York to attend NYU’s renowned Tisch School to study documentary filmmaking. Early in her professional career, she worked on various documentaries for such major networks as Al Jazeera, CNN, HBO, and NHK. In 2017, she released her first full length film, called “Monkey Business: the Adventures of Curious George’s Creators. It received great acclaim worldwide and won the Audience Award at the Nantucket Film Festival. Following that film’s success, Ema moved back to Japan to be able to tell her home country’s stories from a unique perspective. She has recently completed projects on Ichiro, Japanese Olympic sports, and the Japanese Artistic Director at Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. But most importantly, she also completed the film that we’re here to discuss, “Koshien: Japan’s Field of Dreams,” which she started to work on in 2018 and premiered at the DOC NYC festival in 2019. "Koshien" has been lauded worldwide, first when ESPN picked it up, then when it was released in Japan earlier this year, and now again with its Virtual Cinema release in North America.
