Rare pangolin trafficking racket busted in Gujarat; animal worth ₹22 crore rescued in Rajkot

In a major operation against wildlife trafficking, the Rajkot Special Operations Group (SOG) rescued a rare pangolin, one of the world’s most endangered and trafficked animals — from a house in Ghantwad village, Gir Somnath district. Authorities said the accused planned to sell the pangolin for nearly ₹22 crore in the illegal wildlife market. Acting on a tip-off, the SOG arrested two suspects and produced them in court, which granted five-day police remand. Rajkot ACP Bharat Basia said officials were initially unaware of the animal’s identity until forest authorities confirmed it was a pangolin. Investigations are underway to uncover links to a larger wildlife trafficking network across Gujarat.
