A Sixth of Humanity: Independent India's Development Odyssey Devesh Kapur and Arvind Subramanian in conversation with Premila Nazareth Satyanand Political scientist Devesh Kapur and former Chief Economic Advisor of India, Arvind Subramanian chronicle a definitive development history of the nation in A Sixth of Humanity, which traces how India undertook transformations of state, economy, society, and nationhood simultaneously, under the experiment of universal suffrage. With Premila Nazareth Satyanand , they discuss the country's ‘precarious’, ambitious and dynamic journey towards an independent and democratic economy. Devesh Kapur is the Starr Foundation Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. His books include The World Bank: Its First Half Century; Diaspora, Democracy and Development; The Other One Percent: Indians in America; and The Oxford Handbook of Higher Education in Asia and the Pacific. He previously taught at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Arvind Subramanian is senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Previously, he has taught at Brown, Ashoka, and Harvard Universities. He served as the chief economic advisor to the government of India between 2014 and 2018. He also advises state governments on macro-economic, fiscal and sectoral issues. Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the world's top 100 global thinkers in 2011. Premila Nazareth Satyanand has worked with the UN Centre on Transnational Corporations, the Economist Intelligence Unit and others, researching foreign investment and supporting policy dialogue on economic liberalization. She now spends much of her time in the rural Himalayas, contributing to grassroots health, education and livelihood initiatives that strengthen local communities.
