Joined by Asad Baloch, the discussion dives deep into Karachi’s underworld, gang wars, and the rise of one of its most feared figures — Rehman Dakait. 🎙️ Podcast Details Host: Ali Butt Guests: Naeem Mustafa, Asad Baloch Channel: Soch Digital Who Was Rehman Dakait? Abdul Rehman Baloch, better known as Rehman Dakait, was one of the most feared and controversial gangsters in Karachi’s history. Rising from the narrow streets of Lyari, Rehman became a central figure in decades-long gang wars that shaped the city’s criminal and political landscape. Born in 1980 into a family already involved in drug smuggling, Rehman grew up in an environment where crime was normalized. Lyari—one of Karachi’s oldest and most underdeveloped neighborhoods—had long been plagued by violence, illegal arms, and narcotics trade. By his early teens, Rehman was already involved in serious criminal activity. ⚔️ Gang Wars & Underworld Rise As gang rivalries intensified in the 1990s, Rehman aligned himself with Haji Laloo’s gang, eventually becoming one of its most lethal enforcers. His conflict with rival factions—most notably Babu Dakait and later Arshad Pappu—led to brutal turf wars that left dozens dead. Following internal betrayals and the arrest of Haji Laloo, the Lyari underworld split into two major factions: Rehman Dakait vs Arshad Pappu — one of the bloodiest chapters in Lyari’s gang war history. Rehman expanded his influence beyond Lyari into Korangi and Malir, competing with other Karachi-based criminal networks. Politics & Peoples Aman Committee By the late 2000s, Rehman attempted to rebrand himself as a political figure. He founded the Peoples Aman Committee of Lyari, claiming it was meant to restore peace. Authorities, however, alleged that it functioned as a criminal organization with political backing. The group was reportedly affiliated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), though this was officially denied. Arrest, Encounter & Death Rehman Dakait was wanted in 80–100 criminal cases The Government of Sindh placed a Rs. 5 million bounty on his head. In November 2008, Rehman was arrested in Quetta but later reportedly escaped custody. On 9 August 2009, he was killed in a late-night police encounter led by SSP Chaudhry Aslam Khan. The incident remains controversial, with allegations of an extrajudicial killing. Legacy & Public Perception Despite his criminal record, Rehman Dakait is still viewed by many in Lyari as a Robin Hood–like figure, known for distributing wealth among the poor. His funeral drew thousands, highlighting his complex and polarizing legacy.
