John Kallas has been dealing with essential tremors for decades, but things kept getting worse. “I'd be typing so many wrong keys that it takes me twice or three times as long to type what I want to type, because I make so many errors,” he said. “I just get so frustrated trying to even just type of text message or even sitting at my desk typing a letter or an email or something. Just totally frustrated.” Neurosurgeon Dr. George Mandybur was an early adopter of a surgical procedure called Deep Brian Stimulation or DBS to treat movement disorders like tremors. He said it's "Using precision to place a very small electrode in a very precise area in the brain...It's like an electrical pharmacy giving them medication via electricity and evening them out.” Patients stay awake for the minimally invasive procedure. “I mean you can’t feel anything,” said Kallas. “They actually test a little power to you. So, you can actually literally stop...you can see the shakes, the tremors stop during the middle of the procedure.” After recovery, the team worked with him to determine the exact level of stimulation needed for optimal results. “The first time it was really emotional,” Kallas recalled. “You don't really have to think about it anymore. You just do your daily activities, and it doesn't become an interference anymore in your life. So, it's pretty remarkable.” You can learn more by searching for DBS on leehealth.org.
