Château de Roquefixade is perched on a cliff and dominates the gorgeous views of the Pyrénées mountain range in Ariège, Southwest France (Occitanie). The first historical records of the fortress are from 1034. The lords of the castle were the vassals of the Counts of Foix and Toulouse. These noble houses protected the area from the French during the Albigensian Crusade. The crusade was initiated in 1209 by Pope Innocent III to eradicate Catharism, a dualistic movement which undermined the influence of the Catholic Church. The medieval village, located beneath the cliff, was destroyed by the soldiers of Simon IV de Montfort, a prominent military leader fighting on the Catholic French side and a veteran of the Fourth Crusade. During the Albigensian Crusade, Cathars would seek refuge in the fortress before it eventually fell to the hands of the French. In the 1270s, King Philip III of France used the fortress to secure the border with the Kingdom of Aragon. King Louis XIII dismantled the fortress in 1632 because it was too costly to maintain.
