EPIC ALASKAN Road Trip: Scenic Drive to Whittier, Alaska – 4k60fps

The drive from Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary to Whittier, Alaska, is a journey through some of the most stunning and varied landscapes the state has to offer. Starting just south of Anchorage, Potter Marsh provides an excellent vantage point to observe migratory birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is particularly known for its array of waterfowl, which can be observed from boardwalks and viewing platforms. As you set out on the drive, the panorama quickly shifts from the wetlands of Potter Marsh to the rugged, mountainous terrain characteristic of the region. Heading south on the Seward Highway, you will be treated to sweeping views of the Turnagain Arm, a body of water known for its dramatic tides and occasional beluga whale sightings. The highway hugs the coastline, with the Chugach Mountains rising sharply to the east and the expansive waters of the Turnagain Arm to the west. Along the way, there are several pullouts where you can stop to take in the scenery, watch for wildlife, and perhaps catch a glimpse of Dall sheep on the cliffs above. As you approach the town of Girdwood, the scenery becomes even more dramatic with dense forests, towering peaks, and the possibility of seeing the Alyeska Resort's ski slopes. Continuing past Girdwood, the highway begins to wind through increasingly narrow valleys with cascading waterfalls and lush vegetation, providing a picturesque backdrop for the drive. The landscape here is a testament to the region's glacial history, with hanging valleys and moraines dotting the route. The final leg of the journey to Whittier involves traversing the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a unique and essential feature of the trip. This 2.5-mile-long tunnel, which is shared by both vehicles and trains, is the longest highway tunnel in North America. Driving through the tunnel is an experience in itself, as you navigate the single-lane passage carved through solid rock. Emerging on the other side, you'll find yourself in the secluded port town of Whittier, surrounded by dramatic fjords and the stunning Prince William Sound. We drive around the largest building in town that houses nearly the entire population of the city, The Begich Towers Condominium. Hard to believe that the whole town resides in the same complex. One thing for sure, they have a very short commute to go to work! The journey from Potter Marsh to Whittier not only showcases the incredible natural beauty of Alaska but also highlights the engineering feats that make accessing these remote areas possible.
