Today we are visiting the Hundshaupten Wildlife Park in Franconian Switzerland near Egloffstein. The wildlife park is beautifully situated in the middle of a vast forest and rocky landscape and, in addition to the animals, also offers very beautiful hiking trails with great views over Franconian Switzerland. Even the journey through the autumnal landscape of Franconian Switzerland is a feast for the eyes. The brightly colored trees practically glow in the sun. Many parking spaces at the entrance show that the wildlife park is very popular, especially at weekends and with families with children. During the week it is quieter. The Hundshaupten Wildlife Park was founded over 50 years ago by the owner of Hundshaupten Castle, Gudila Baroness von Pölnitz, and donated to the Forchheim district in 1991. Hundshaupten Castle, very close to the wildlife park, has been owned by the family since 1661 and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The wildlife park is over 40 hectares in size and there are almost 40 different species of animals to see, mainly native animals or animals that have immigrated a long time ago. There are three different circular trails of varying lengths. Dogs on a leash are allowed. You can also buy wild food and feed the animals. The first animals greet us right at the entrance. In addition to the very trusting goats, we are of course particularly impressed by the pigs.😁🐷In addition to wild boars, we also see pot-bellied pigs, mini pigs and the Mangalitza pig, also known as the woolly pig, with its distinctive fur. In between, the raccoons romp around in their cage. They are cute to look at, but the cage is secured at the bottom with thick wire mesh because of the very sharp claws and teeth of the small predators. The moose are standing right at the fence of their enclosure today because it is feeding time and they are already waiting for their food. We then walk past a paddock with donkeys and the rare European bison with their offspring, then steeply up the mountain to the fallow deer and ibexes. These climbing artists particularly like the rocky landscape of Franconian Switzerland. We walk through the beautiful autumn landscape back down into the valley of the Hüllergraben, and soon uphill again past impressive rocks. A wooden walkway leads us over the wolf enclosure. The three wolves are very active today and it is interesting to watch them. The information board tells us about the origins of the wolves. One of the wolves was caught in the Eifel and, according to its ear tag, comes from Belarus! It is unbelievable how far these animals can travel! We also see the lynx today. It is resting right near the fence. We are lucky, it is usually very difficult to see because it is shy and often hides in the trees. At the Breitenstein lookout point we have a fantastic view of the nearby Hundshaupten Castle, the magical Trubach Valley and the hills of Franconian Switzerland, glowing in autumnal colors. Next to the lookout point, various breeds of sheep are waiting to be petted. Now we head back downhill towards the entrance. But we still find an enclosure with a kind of witch's house. Who lives there? A little snout pokes out of the house. It is the porcupine family that lives here.😊It is now late afternoon and we are lucky that the crepuscular and nocturnal animals are now waking up. The porcupines are very attractive animals with their black and white spines. When in danger, they raise their spines and use them to scare away even much larger predators. We reach the entrance area again and fortify ourselves with coffee and cake in the park tavern. It was very nice. We will definitely come back!
