A 6-minute real-time look at the traffic chaos created by the Surfers Paradise Esplanade closure and Elkhorn Avenue traffic changes. This video is from the first four days of the Esplanade closure trial. It shows the level of traffic chaos created by closing the Esplanade to traffic. The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise is the main artery servicing the most densely populated eastern side of the city. What you see here is traffic forced on to a single lane, north-bound Orchid Avenue and a single lane, south-bound Surfers Paradise Boulevard. This video documents prolonged gridlock through Surfers Paradise, showing how traffic has become dangerously congested for residents, tourists, and service providers. Far from improving safety and accessibility, the trial appears to have created major delays, confusion, and unsafe conditions along one of the city’s busiest precincts. What You’ll See • Fire trucks stuck behind cars with no ability to manoeuvre • Ambulances slowed by trams and blocked intersections • Police vehicles trapped despite lights and sirens active • Cars stationary for extended periods across key access points • Pedestrians darting between traffic due to stopped vehicles • Long delays entering and exiting Surfers Paradise, including tourist coaches and service vehicles Why It Matters These scenes raise concerns about emergency-response times, visitor experience, public safety, and the ability of frontline services to operate efficiently along the beachfront. With increased congestion funnelling into narrow streets, the new road layout appears to be reducing mobility rather than enhancing it. The Big Question If this is the everyday reality of the trial, what happens during peak tourism season, major events, or life-threatening emergencies?
