This area was the very beginning of the Borax mining before it shifted to Death Valley not far away. Francis "Borax" Smith started here actually employing 24 mule teams to transport salt and borax collected and refined from Teels's Marsh the nearby playa. The feat of muleskinners driving these long teams through mountain passes amazes me. The chain would get cuaght up executing steep turns on shelf roads. The muleskinners would have to ask the 6th mules to step over the chain to the right or left so it could form a straight line back to the wagons. If you have ridden before you'll appreciate how dangerous that must have been. My little rock crawling episode was nothing in comparison. The town of Marietta was pretty lawless no doubt leadng to some of the themes in The High Plains Drifter, which was filmed in this country. You may recognize Lake Mono in the beginning of the film. A mining town, too many lawless characters, gorgeous scenery of the California and Nevada high plains, all you need is to add a ghostly Clint Eastwood and you have you have the makings of an iconic film. Don't expect that here. I have fun but please don't compare me to Mr Eastwood! I could never ride as well as he does,.
