(14 Sep 2000) Natural Sound The head of China's National Assembly, Li Peng met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov on Thursday as part of his nine-day visit to Russia. The meeting will cover the development of bilateral relations, which both countries acknowledge to be an important step in maintaining global peace. Economic and military co-operation will also be high on the agenda. Talks over the past three days have also focused on means of opposing U-S plans to develop a defense against ballistic missiles. Both sides acknowledged their determination to fight extremism. Li Peng is also expected to meet with Anatoly Chubais, the chairman of Russia's power system, RAO EES Rossii, to discuss the possibility of delivering Russian electric power to North China. China has become the main benefactor to Russia's ailing defense industries. It has set up contracts to buy (b) billions of dollars worth of jets, missiles, submarines and destroyers.
