At North America’s eastern edge, Newfoundland’s wild coast is home to icebergs, seabird colonies, and a handful of remarkable locals. In Witless Bay, volunteers of the Puffin & Petrel Patrol rescue young puffins lured onto roads by artificial lights and return them to Green Island, North America’s largest puffin colony. Newfoundland is also known for the MerB’ys — men posing as bearded mermaids for a charity calendar that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local causes. Others challenge old traditions too: Kim Orren and Leo Hearn train girls to fish on the open Atlantic, breaking the industry’s male dominance. Jill Curran has revived Ferryland’s abandoned lighthouse by creating “Lighthouse Picnics,” a women-run venture offering homemade meals with whales passing by below.
